As Adarsh gazes at the depleted ocean, a stark
reminder of the vibrant seas of the past, he grapples with the harsh reality
that the world has irreversibly changed. The diminishing sunlight evokes a fear
in him that he may never experience the warmth of the sun again. Amidst this
grim backdrop, Adarsh aims to discuss the multifaceted issue of "Climate Polycrisis,"
which encompasses interconnected crises stemming from climate change across
various sectors.
The 2021 WHO Health and Climate Change Survey Report
highlights the severe threats posed by climate change to human health,
estimating an additional 250,000 deaths annually between 2030 and 2050.
The causes of climate polyclimatism, including
greenhouse gas emissions and unsustainable consumption, are outlined, with a
particular focus on their impact on vulnerable populations. According to an RBI
report, extreme heat and humidity may adversely affect labour hours, and up to
4.5% of India’s GDP could be at risk by 2030.
The effects manifest in extreme weather events,
disruptions to agriculture, health impacts, economic disruptions, and potential
political instability.
To address this crisis comprehensively, a holistic
strategy is proposed, emphasizing the need for diverse perspectives and goals
of stakeholders while prioritizing resilience, equity, and justice, so that
innocents like Adarsh can live happily in the near future.
Key measures include reducing greenhouse gas
emissions, adapting to climate change impacts, promoting sustainable
development, strengthening international cooperation, introducing carbon
taxation, engaging the public in carbon reduction and sustainability, setting
realistic carbon reduction targets, and introducing carbon GDP in order to
promote ecological sustainability.
India's initiatives in climate change mitigation, such
as the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and Nationally Determined
Contributions (NDC), are acknowledged. The conclusion underscores the
importance of a comprehensive and integrated approach involving individuals,
businesses, governments, and international organizations. The establishment of
a national carbon accounting system is highlighted as a crucial step toward
informed decision-making and progress tracking for a sustainable future.
